ive been going to school for 3 years to be a teacher. i have one year before i graduate. yesterday i was shopping my daughter was exhausted and i had to make one more stop. i parked in front of the store , locked the doors and ran in. i was in the store for about 5 mins and walked out towards the door there was a cop there who saw my four and half year old locked in the car. he told me it was a criminal offense and now i have a trial in march. its a misdemoner charge and i have no other criminal history i dont know if i will be found guilty but theyre charging me with leaving a child unattended. i dnt think i will ever be able to become a teacher now. after ten years do things come off your record if so maybe in 10 years i can become a teacher. ive been sick to stomach and can barely stand the thought of all of this. this is the biggest mistake ive ever made.

I am sorry this happened. I think you should get a lawyer to help you fight the charge.

I'm just curious what subject you are going to teach.

You can get it expunged if you are eligible for it after the case has been settled in court. I don't think you need to wait 10 years to become a teacher; why don't you contact the board or education and see what their minimum requirements (in regards to a criminal history) are for employment?

Yeah - but my DH had a similar situation - contributing the delinquency of a minor (at 21, she was 17) - it was expunged (sp?). It didn't make a difference, he was "charged" with it and the school system still "sees" expunged records if they involve minors. In his case, he couldn't do his intership and so couldn't graduate with his Bachelors (there was a no degree option to graduate with an Bachelors in Education without being a certified teacher).

I would say - switch to adult ed or find another way you can use an education background in a different field (occupational training, museums ??) and just make sure you secure Bachelor's even if you can't teach due to your record.

Sorry for the sorry news. His was in his face for 20 yrs and was suppose to fall off at that point (2 yrs ago) but didn't (he has to get screened every so often for his job and report what his record is). This was for the state of Florida though. Chances MD is softer on criminals? Maybe there more democrats there!

I think it's totally unfair, but it is what it is.

What county are you in? If you are in Prince George's, Baltimore City or Montgomery these types of charges are not that serious, and the courts have bigger fish to fry-

However if you are on the eastern shore, western md or charles, Anne Arundel or Baltimore county, etc you might be in trouble-

My suggestion, get a lawyer, have him get it dismissed if possible, if not cop out to some form of probation before judgement (PBJ) or stet docket with the stipulation that you can have it expunged after you face your punishment (community service, probation, etc)
