I'm considering moving from Pittsburgh to Maryland. I need affordable housing in a decent senior community where a woman wouldn't mind being alone. I want to be as close to the eastern shore as I can safely get. I've considered Salisbury but have read too much about the crime rate. Another problem is I'll have to have some kind of part time job (probably retail) to supplement my pension so I'd need to be near shops. Can someone please give me some solid suggestions?

On the whole, you will find more "affordable" senior housing in Delaware. Easton and Centreville have very nice 55+ communities where you purchase a home, but they are not budget-priced. You could probably find rental apartments in Easton with a high percentage of seniors. Easton is a very nice town.

Delaware has some large 55+ modular home communities. The climate is the same as the Eastern Shore of Maryland, but taxes and home prices are less. I suggest you check the Delaware forum for specific communities.

i lived in salisbury from 2001 to 2006 and loved it. if it were totally my decision, i'd still be there. i know crime in the area is often a subject on this forum and i'm not discounting it. however, it was still higher than average when i lived there, most of the time alone, and i never felt unsafe or had a problem. i have continued contacts with friends who have lived there for many years and this is not a major concern for them. i'm certain that some of it depends on where you are in salisbury.

mallard landing is a retirement community in salisbury-condos and private homes- and in the last year has begun offering some of their units as rentals, rather than requiring a purchase; of course this is in response to difficult economic times. this is a very lovely community, close to shopping, but tucked away off the major roads, and is very well kept. i don't know if that would be a resource for you, but i guess my point is i would not let crime stories on this forum discourage you from investigating salisbury further. there would certainly be more job possibilities there and even in ocean city, 30 miles away. i like easton but it is too small for my tastes, and my very personal opinion is that there is a snob element on the part of many who live there. again, certainly there are exceptions,

just my 2 cents worth. i feel salisbury was, and may still be, a very livable town, one that sometimes gets a bad press.

Thank you very much for your help. I won't be moving for a while, probably some time in the summer, but suggestions are always helpful for an out of towner!

I would highly recommend Leisure World in Silver Spring. Rent is very affordable for seniors and they have tons of amenities for the senior community. If you have a car, you would be 20 minutes from DC and 2.5 hrs from Ocean City but less than an hour from the Chesapeake Bay beaches. My aunt lives there, its a very safe community with a great social life for seniors. When I say the rent is affordable, I mean on a national scale. You can get a 1 BD for under $900 and often far below. Crime isn't a problem, it's gated and its usually 60+ there.
