Hello all! Moved to VA almost 2 years ago and are now seeking some country living again. Can anyone fill me in on the way of life in smithsburg md? We arent looking for fast pace or anything fancy...just a single family home, an acre of land and good schools. Does this area fit the bill? Any other suggestions that wouldn't be an awful commute to Alexandria Va? Thanks in advavance. (oh, and must be within 15-20 minutes to a hospital).

I think Smithsburg fits your needs perfectly. Great quiet area, excellent schools, pretty countryside along South Mountain. The new Hagerstown Hospital (Meritus Medical Center) is 10 minutes away. It's only a few miles from I-70.

Commuting to Alexandria would be a pain unless you can leave before or after the rush.

Commuting would be a pain. We live in Middletown, about 25 minutes from Smithsburg CLOSER to Alexandria. It takes my husband a good 1 hr and 20 min (average) to get to Tyson's Corner. I would look at Jefferson or Middletown as they are close to highways that'll get you to I270 easily, or take you the back way on Rt. 7 into Virginia. GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community will help you in the school department.

We'll be listing our house in February, in Middletown, if you are interested! Transferring to Boston for my husband's job...

Best of luck!

Heather3- we looked in middletown but were having a hard time finding a house we liked so we started looking at surrounding areas. Can you give any more details on your home?
Hub has to be to work by 6am so the drive would be very early morning, plus half the time he could commute in with buddys that live in frederick. Its been very hard narrowing down places to look at, so many little towns scattered around!
Thanks for the answers all

Please tell me you're kidding. I cannot imagine anyone possibly commuting to Alexandria VA, from Smithsburg MD. As a 60-year area resident, I thought I had heard of everything, but that takes the cake. Your overall transportation costs, and related carbon footprint, will be simply outrageous. You will go though a new car nearly every year. As for schools, doesn't NoVa have some of the best schools systems in the nation?

If you want somewhere closer to Alexandria, rural, with excellent schools, maybe consider northern Calvert County (Dunkirk) MD, or southern Anne Arundel County MD.

My husband's boss commutes from Hagerstown to Tyson's Corner, every day. I think the counties you mentioned above, plus NoVa in general are too expensive to live in for the OP. I used to think my father was crazy for driving to Tyson's from Frederick area in the 1970s-2010, but you go where the job is and stay where you can afford to live.
And, you won't go through a new car each year...especially if you get a Prius or something that doesn't guzzle gas. However, I do agree, anything to Alexandria from beyond the Frederick area is a bit far to do every day for years on end. But, if you do it for a few years and save to move closer or something it CAN be done, just know that family time during the week will be minimal.

There are thousands of neighborhoods of all kinds, much closer to Alexandria, to meet every conceivable taste anyone could have in housing, and surely she can find something closer than Smithsburg MD. Where do people come up with these wacky ideas? How she possibly have any time left in the evenings to spend with her family, cook, help with their homework, attend their activities? Don't they matter, or count for something?
