I don't know of any areas that are especially eco friendly, though Columbia and Howard County like to pat themselves on the back despite designing itself to be amenable to cars only.
Frederick might be a good choice also as it is economically thriving and walkable in its core. It's developing a bit of restaurant "scene" thanks to Volt, a restaurant operated by a famous TV Chef named Voltaggio.
If you meant lush, verdant and scenic mountains, definitely try Cumberland or elsewhere in Garrett and Allegany Counties. Perhaps the Deep Creek Lake resort area would be a good place for employment. Jobs are harder to come by the further you get from Baltimore and DC.

I'd suggest you start with finding work that offers enough income to support you wherever that might be... and then to use the 2-3 years breathing room you still have (before school districts matter) to poke around **in person** for some place to live that might appeal more or even approach your ideal which might still be in the same neighborhood or town you started out with.

To add to what's been said: It's likely that you will find the cost of living and home prices astronomically higher in MD, relative to Buffalo. Homes will probably be 4-5X more here.

That really only applies to the metro areas in Maryland. Plenty cheap out west.

Just a word of warning from someone who left Buffalo many years ago and now lives in the DC suburbs; people in Maryland are nowhere near as friendly as people from Buffalo. Now that I've been away for 10+ years, I would love to go back
