Hi all. I'll be relocating to Maryland come March and need advice on where to live. I accepted a job in Columbia and would like a minimal commute but the one thing I HAVE figured out is that Columbia is crazy expensive. Any advice anyone can give on the surrounding areas would be most helpful. Obviously, the cheaper the better but of course the area needs to be safe and I'd like to avoid sittting in traffic as much as possible. Most of my searching has led me to Laurel, Owings Mills, and Glen Burnie. I'm a 27 year old female, looking for a 1 bedroom apartment.

Thanks in advance!

I'd 86 Owings Mills based on the commute - that side of the beltway can be awful, as can 795 when anything bad happens.

I think Laurel would a decent bet for someone looking to save some money. Might look also around Elkridge, Catonsville ... there are some really nice old houses that have been split up into apartments in the tiny village of Relay, easy access to 95 from there. That would be my first choice, for sure, because it's quiet and has access to Patapsco State Park.

I guess it might also be helpful to know what you like doing in your spare time (if anything).

I'd take a look at Laurel, Elkridge, Catonsville, Odenton, Jessup, Hanover. It really depends where in columbia you'll be working. If you're closer to the Mall, I'd say Laurel area for sure. If it's closer to Fort Meade, I'd look at one of the area on the Rt.1 Corridor. Glen Burnie will be a horrible drive, as will Owings Mills.
