hi, i recently moved here from chicago and i have no idea what's in store for me this winter!
i know this question will depend on oil costs this winter, but i've never had oil heat! i'm also trying to figure out if it makes most economic sense to sign up for the year-long payment plan or the month to month or pay on demand.
i live alone in an 1800 sq. foot row home built in the 1930s (mainly stone), with a basement and two levels, and good (new) windows...

After taxes and such, you will pay about the cost of gas, on a per/gallon price. Because you live in a row house, you have the best "insulation" on at least 1 side of your house. I have oil-heat for my modest house and we go through about a tank and a half per year. Typical tanks are 275 gal. So, figure about 400 gallons multiplied by 2.50/gal - you're looking at about a $1000 for the winter. My house is roughly the same size as yours, but is free-standing, so i will probably lose a fair bit more heat than you. I would budget a cool grand for the winter.

i know this question will depend on oil costs this winter, but i've never had oil heat! i'm also trying to figure out if it makes most economic sense to sign up for the year-long payment plan or the month to month or pay on demand.
