We will be moving to Howard County (likely Columbia) but are not sure where yet. We are interested in the "nicer areas" (less crime, better schools, etc). Any suggestions?

If you do a search on this forum for Howard County and schools you will find a lot of threads that will probably help you. It's hard to make recommendations without knowing if you'll be renting or buying, and what price you are looking for.

Howard County schools are considered the best in the state, but not all of Howard Co. fit that description. Columbia has a higher crime rate than other parts of the county surrounding it. Ellicott City is very popular, as are parts of Western Howard County. The school districts are very important--make sure you know which schools you want before searching for a house or neighborhood. Depending on your price range, you may also want to consider going just over the county line into Carroll County. The Sykesville/Eldersburg area also has some of the best schools in the state & is generally less expensive (taxes & home prices) and not as crowded. There is a lot to read on these forums about both areas.

Also, keep in mind that HCPSS does periodic redistricting. The current plans can be found at Howard County Public School System look under the 2012 Feasibility Study. It would be a bummer to sign up for one school, only to find that in Aug 2013 your children would be attending a different school. (But generally, the schools next to/adjacent aren't typically that much different.) Several elementary schools in Columbia between US29 and Rt.1 are being shuffled in part to the new school in Elkridge and to relieve overcrowding. Nothing is set in stone as they're working on the plans this summer and will finalize them in November.

You should also consider where you would be commuting. The southern fringe of Columbia is significantly closer to Washington DC, etc. The western parts like Glenwood are very nice but significantly expensive. If you have an $800K budget, I would recommend Glenwood, esp. if commuting down Georgia Avenue.
