My boyfriend and I are looking to move to Maryland from up north. We have 3 small dogs and would need to live in an area that has a small to medium yards. Definitely a low crime area. My boyfriend is looking to open a personal training gym so somewhere within 30 some min drive to a populated/wealthy area. For myself I teach Japanese and art so an area that thrives on arts and culture. A plus would be a Japanese or Asian market near by since that's where I like to buy most of my groceries. Also if there is any jazz clubs around its good know for a night out.

Give or take, rent can be around the $2000 something range. Buying probably anything around $300,000. We don't have to be in a wealthy area just mostly safe for living. Work though is good to be near a wealthy area for business.

Also we are looking for a small/medium house so again if the houses are large 4+ bedrooms in a high end area we are fine with a 2/3 bedroom house.

You have a lot of requirements. I think the best fit would be between Columbia and Catonsville, maybe Ellicott City. If you look for a smaller house with a yard, you may find one within your budget. The trick will be finding someone will to accept the three dogs. I'd put a want ad on Craigslist.

There is a large Asian grocery (H-Mart) in Catonsville.

Ok thank you! I will look into those areas. Probably buying will be our best option for the dog situation.

The mt Vernon neighborhood in Baltimore was the first place to come to mind but with the pups you may want to look more toward the counties in areas like annapolis and Towson.

YEP Columbia. That's where I live. Safe. Mid to upper wealthy mostly. Ofcourse you have outsiders from baltimore city living in certain parts of the city but the crime has always been very low out here. Plus columbia and ellicott city were listed in the top 5 on the top 10 in Forbes best places to live. 2 years in a row.

Dont know about artsy or jazz clubs. It's more family oriented out here. But you can find that someplace near like DC or Batimore city.

Next to Columbia I would probably say Montgomery county. Same kind of crowd but closer to DC. So the artsiness and jazz clubs would be easier to find. I dont know about crime in montgomery co. Would have to google that.

It was CNN's top 100 best places to live in the U.S. not Forbes. Columbia ranked #2 in 2010. Doesn't get any better than that. I think we ranked #5 a year later.

Here's the link...
Best Places to Live 2010 - Top 100: 1-25 - from MONEY Magazine

Best Places to Live 2010 - Top 100: City details: Columbia, MD - from MONEY Magazine

The population is a lil over 200,000 now. The 2010 list says pop. 150,000.

It takes closer to 15 - 20 minutes to get to either D.C or Baltimore (where you'll find jazz clubs) and not 30 to 60 minutes like Money Magazine says. If you take 29 south straight down from Columbia. You'll be in D.C in 15 minutes. The silver spring metro station. It sits right on the Maryland D.C line. And is really just sits inside the city of D.C. Same for Baltimore. That one takes about 20 to 25 minutes to reach the city. Depending on which way you go.
