Hi,

In 2010 I was transferred to Maryland on Dec 20th 2010 and only stayed for 11 days in the year 2010. During that time my work location was New Jersey. I stayed in MD because I was aware that i will transferred to MD from January 1st 2011.

In 2010 I got the W2 for working 10 days in New Jersey and submitted the tax return for MI (My Prior State) and NJ because I worked in these two states.

As I stayed in Maryland for 11 days without working there. Is there any tax liability on me to file the return for MD state.

As I have used a Maryland address for filing the tax returns, i got a letter from Comptroller of Maryland to clarify why i have use a Maryland address but not filed the MD state tax returns.

Please let me know if there is any liability on me to file tax return for MD state in this situation

Clarification: "I changed my address at first of the year"

I've had this happen to me before. It was a tremendous pain in the to prove I did not live in Maryland during the tax year, and only moved in January. You should not have to pay any tax, but they will demand proof of you not being a MD resident the year before. The proof that they will accept is where the headache comes in. In my case, Virginia had to send them a transcript of my tax return that I filed with them. (they did it, but said they had never heard of that before). Maryland would not accept any other proof. I hope they will now, but in 1999 they wouldn't.
