Hello, I'm new to the forum and I'm sorry if this has been covered a million times but I am really hopeless and need some advice. I am from New York and I already know saying that gives me enemies around here. I graduated last December and I can't find ANY work at all. I really tried and I do not fit in. I do not mean to insult Md, I just thought the unemployment rates would be lower here than NY and it has seemed to switch on me after moving.

Besides JHU in Baltimore, which kind of scares me, and colleges in College Park which is 45 minutes away, are there are good areas for decent employment around here? I have tried everything. Fort Meade seemed like a good opportunity but you really need to have good connections and one of my connections is not helping much.

My degree is kind of useless at this point but I usually get the job on the first interview and I'm noticing it's really hard to get a job anywhere. I am contemplating moving to a different state, however, it would be nice to know if someone could give me optimistic advice 'cause I've been here a year and I hate not working.

Thanks for your time.

Absolutely nothing at all?
Or nothing with the title or salary that you want?

There are no "good areas" anywhere in the country...
but of the remaining areas they are everywhere if the applicant has the skill/experience needed.

People without skills or experience...

It is a tough market everywhere but it would help to know what your degree and experience is

The DC region costs so much because the plebian masses say 'it's because of all the jobs!'. The problem with that mentality is that it is actually false. DC has jobs, but not so much for entry level career track. Unless you are in an IT field you would be hard pressed to find a job that is considered remotely adequate to support yourself.

My advice to you is that if your degree is related to finance or economics at all, go back to NY. If it is in IT, stay here. If it is in intelligence, you're gonna have to join the military and do your time if you don't have already existent connections. If it is in political science, punch yourself in the face and go back to school for a real degree. If it is in pretty much anything else, you might want to consider moving to medium sized cities throughout the nation. Even though I make a decent living here in DC, I know I would have a much better quality of life had I stayed in Ohio (I moved here not for jobs but for a far more mundane reason which I will not share).

This doesn't really help you but it's related to your observation.

If you think the people in Maryland are prejudiced because you're from New York, don't not move any further south. I live in NC now and am originally from MD. I feel the dislike of northerners almost every day. And for some bizarre reason, they really don't like New Yorkers and go out of their way to make sure everybody knows it. Just a little heads up for you.

I like New Yorkers. I just hate New York city (just that city in particular; heck I even like Albany).

Finding a job is really tough considering the competition we are in right now. But if you keep looking around for jobs I'm sure you'll find one that doesn't need if you're from NY or not but depends on the skills that you've got. Goodluck on your job hunt.

You can try for some call center job. That don't need any specific skill. There are many opportunities but all you need is to grab it on the right time. Maryland does have lots of job out there.

Being from New York has absolutely nothing to do with it.

It's a competitive market right now. It may have to do with your skillset and experience, not necessarily the region.

Well, perhaps not as the poster presented it.

However, something about that place can lead to a rather nasty condition:
