My boyfriend works at BWI & I work in Reston, right now we currently rent in Columbia (I know, very stressful commute for me!) and I am so SICK of it. Not the area, love it, but the commute is terrible and the expenses just getting to work is killing me. So, we need to move! I've been looking in silver spring but everything seems so pricey and out of our budget. The closer we are to MY job the more we can afford, although I don't want him to have to make the same commute I've been going through. So we are looking for something in the middle or as close to the middle as possible. With a budget of $1350 ish for rent. What areas should we be looking in?

We have a 2 month old son, so definitely somewhere safe!

I feel your pain. A better location would be in Arlington, but your budget will only get you an efficiency apartment.

One suggestion is to look for a creative solution such as a house share with another couple. Otherwise, I suggest your boyfriend make the sacrifice of the longer commute. As a new mom you have enough reasons for fatigue without a long commute.

One of you needs to find a new job (close to where the other one works).

How about living in the district of Columbia? Shorten your drive, eliminate 495, and your husband can use the Marc to get to bwi.

Ummmh..Do you have any suggestions for a safe area of the District at $1350/month, and a second bedroom for a child?

I didn't know of any except as a house share, so didn't suggest any.

I don't know DC well at all so I didn't make any suggestions, but I know my friend and a roomate rented a 2Br apartment in a nice corner of NW for that price, There area was plenty nice, safe, with plenty of kids.

I assumed this was not an anomaly; however now that I've looked at craigslist, I realize I was mistaken. Holy crap, DC is expensive these days.

DC proper ain't going to work on $1350 month, not with a kid (who'll presumably need to go to school eventually, and the areas you want to go to public school in DC aren't going for $1350 a month.)

Silver Spring or anywhere inner/middle suburban MD isn't going to be fun getting to Reston, going 495 the whole way.

I'd recommend somewhere in Frederick/Mt.Airy/Urbana/Clarksburg/Damascus as your taste prefers.

You don't have to hit anything other than the fairly smooth sailing on 270/70 and moderately bumpy sailing on 15. (Why deal with the Legion Bridge/495 when you don't have to?)

Long term solution is find jobs closer to each other.
