We currently rent close to the mall, and I take the Rt. 29 south to work everyday. Normally the traffic would be very heavy starting from Exit 15 and some times I got jammed till Exit 18 where I normally use to exit highway. Almost every single time the traffic jam happened, I could see a long line of break lights ahead by the time I took the exit.

We are considering buying a house close to 40 intersection (exit 24), and would like to know from you guys who commute through this part of Rt 29 everyday, if it's really bad for commuting.

Without traffic, it normally takes me only 5-6 mins from exit 18 to exit 24. And I have to get back close to mall by 630pm every evening to pick up my wife.

Thanks a lot.

Re: How bad is the traffic on Rt.29 from Columbia Mall to the intersection with Rt.40?

I haven't been that way lately, but if traffic continues to be bad, look for the alternate route north on St John's Lane.

NOOOOO! Not St. Johns Ln! That's my hood and we don't want any more thru traffic.

I usually have no probs taking 29 south from Rt 40 to 32 in the morning. It's a different story in the evening when 29 N from 32 is jammed until after the Broken Land merge is often bumper to bumper until after Rt 108 and slow all the way to Rt 40 depending on what's going on with the 40/70 interchange.

Is st. johns the only alternative route? Yes, I was more concerned about the evening drive, especially around 6-630pm. Our target house is actually on the east side of 29, so st. johns is in the west, right?

True, to use St Johns, I think you would have do a U-turn in the shopping center. There isn't really a good alternative to Route 29. That's by design to keep traffic out of the Columbia streets.

IMO it's not that bad on 29N between 108 and Rt 40. I feel that the worst part of the 29N evening commute is around the BrokenLand merge, which backs traffic up from Rt 32, and then around 175. I don't mind the congestion as much once you get past that area and have the 3 traffic lanes. It seems to move better, even though it's still slow and congested around Rt 100. And 6:30 might actually be a little better than around 5:00 when I'm on the road.
