I read a similar post with this same question but it was from 2007 so I am looking for updated info. I am currently looking to move to the area and would like a little input on what is better, Hagerstown or PA. I am a nurse and will hopefully be working at Meritus or Summit health in Waynesboro. Really the job situation is not a concern for me, more so the housing issue.

I am currently living in Germany, I am getting divorced and will probably not get a chance to scope the areas out before I make the move. I will be moving with 3 kids 13,10,9 and 2 dogs, so I want someplace with good schools and houses with big yards. I have read a lot of "reviews" on the areas but they are all from several years back.

I think that I have my mind made up then someone tells me I should look into something else and I get all stressed again. The most recent thing I was told to check out was comparing the taxes. UGH - any information on these areas would be greatly appreciated. Taxes, general living environment, schools, info on the hospitals from employees or patients (good place to work?? good care??)

Thanks!

In my opinion:

Waynesboro Pros: Cheaper, more of a small town feel, quieter, for a town its size they have some nice amenities, like the hospital, Renfrew museum, etc..

Hagerstown Pros: Shopping/Dining, housing stock and variety, more parks and culture(concerts, museums)

I'd say schools are probably a toss up. Have heard good things about the Waynesboro Hospital. I thought Meritus was on a hiring freeze but could be wrong. If you pick Waynesboro, you will more than likely spend a lotof time in Chambersburg or Hagerstown for health care, dining, shopping, etc.

You should try to visit for a few days, stay in a hotel, drive around, and then make your decision once you have sees both towns.

You could try a between-ish area. I live in Smithsburg and I'm about 15 minutes from either Waynesboro or Meritus, and it's not a stressful drive either way...you wouldn't necessarily have to feel locked in to one or the other. Smithsburg is a really nice little town with a library, post office, a couple of banks, Food Lion, a couple of restaurants, so it in and of itself isn't the middle of nowhere, but then it's also easy to get to more civilization. I don't have kids but my neighbors rave about the schools here.

Smithsburg schools are excellent. Nice community, no crime, pretty setting. Smithsburg would be a great choice.

I love Carmine's restaurant..... great little place.

I lived in Franklin County, PA about 10 years ago. We chose Franklin County, PA over going across to Maryland primarily because of the lower cost of living, taxes, taxes on retirement pay, and at that time a better selection of houses on the market. I looked on both sides of the border for houses 8 months (We wanted to wait for some situations to finalize), the PA side always came out ahead for us. My wife and I both worked in Maryland. Hagerstown was close enough to go shopping to... Mostly on the way home.
