My son on active duty is being transferred to work out of California, Maryland in two months, with a wife and two small kids. Doesn't have time to look in advance. Prefer an easy commute from a 3 br house with a back yard and good school district. Don't want to spend more than 1200 a month for rent. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The best place to look would be at remilitary.com around NAS Lexington Park. The rental housing supply is very limited, and your son's expectations are unrealistic. More realistically, expect to pay $1600 for a 3-br house. There were also a couple of rentals for apartments or mobile homes for $750 and $950.

He should also check Realtor.com and zillow.com. There is a 3-br townhouse apartment for $1175 called St. Mary's Landing in Lexington Park. The schools appear to be average or better. There's also single-family houses for $1275-$1325 in Lexington Park. Please suggest to the wife that she should participate in the search if your son doesn't have time, otherwise she may end up with something unsuitable.

The following website has a wealth of information on every aspect of the NAS Pax River area, and St. Mary's County, including realty advice Southern Maryland Onlineâ„¢ - Your on-line community for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.â„¢ .

They also have a forums section Southern Maryland Community Forums (many of the posters there can be sarcastic idiots, but for a basic relocation question like yours they should be helpful and on the level).
