I believe Maryland is a southern state also but in todays time Mid Atlantic would be the best description.

Maryland is not a 'Southern' state. It is a state with some regions that show similarities with 'Southern' states. And judging by the joke of a Republican Party in the state, it would be a safe wager that these 'Southern' regions are relatively few and/or insignificant.
