Hi all.... I am COMPLETELY in shock that my fiance is being relocated to Patuxent River for the Navy. I'm a nurse and saw a nice looking hospital in La Plata which looks to be about an hour away. Seems like Mechanicsville is the half way point... any thoughts, tips, advice?? What is it like there? I grew up in Pittsburgh so I know the general feel of the east coast. Been in California for 16 years though! I'm scared!

How long will this transfer last?

Will his job require than he live close (eg commute 5x8) to base?
...or will his shifts let him report on for a few days and then leave the area (eg 3on/4off)?

3 year assignment... he will have to commute daily so we will have to be close enough to base for that, and close enough for me to work near a hospital.

There is indeed a hospital in LaPlata, Charles County.

You might also consider Calvert Memorial Hospital located north of Pax River in Prince Frederick, Calvert County, though to get to and from the base, you must cross the Thomas Johnson Bridge (Maryland Route 4), which is a high two-lane crossing of the Patuxent River (for comparison, think of the San Diego–Coronado Bridge which is similar, though much wider). If you choose Calvert Memorial, there are nice housing developments south of Prince Frederick and north of the Thomas Johnson Bridge in places like Lusby (though you will be close to the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Generating Station if you locate in southern Calvert, if that bothers you at all).

If you choose St. Mary's County, there is a substantial Amish population there (complete with horse-drawn carriages and wagons), something most people from outside the area don't know about.
