Hey everyone,

So I got a job offer for a position in Herndon, VA. What are the possibilities for living in Maryland? Around a 30 minute is ok- we are looking for a single family home preferably, will do townhouse only if absolutely have to. We are buying and are looking between $400k-$500k.

Any input if living in Maryland is feasible, and if so what areas should we look into and if you know of specific neighborhoods that'd be awesome too-- we are in town checking out the area this weekend. Thanks!!

The only place in Maryland that is a 30 minute commute from Herndon would be Potomac or Bethsda. Both are the most expensive areas of Montgomery County, and I doubt you would find anything there under $500,000.

Why not live in Virginia? Loudon County would have plenty of houses in your price range.

There is nowhere in Maryland where you can get all the way to Herndon in 30 minutes. I have a colleague who lived in Reston and worked in Bethesda and it takes him 60 minutes most days to get in. In the DC area, you need to live near your job or be prepared to deal with a huge commute. It's how this area is.

Unless you have a special reason for wanting to live in Maryland, it is not worth the hassle of commuting across the Cabin John Bridge. I suggest looking in Sterling or Ashburn.

You might make it in 30 minutes from Point of Rocks (Where US 15 crosses the Potomac) but I doubt it. I commuted down 15 from Frederick to Herndon for about 8 years. It always took longer than 45 minutes and that was 10 years ago! It is a different kind of commute than one along the beltway but it is still long

Thin and few.... none even remotely practical.

Living in MD where the crime and taxes are many times higher than in VA makes no sense when you can just live in VA. If I worked in VA I'd live there.

Where do you get the crime info? Some parts of MD that are the most convenient to Herndon are very safe. I won't argue taxes, I'll even concede them but crime?

I am afraid there really isn't a short commute from MD to Herndon. Your best bet is to shop around the VA area and you will definitely find something in that price range.
