Hello,
I already own a handgun and wanted to know what laws there are concerning taking it out of state (to Pennsylvania specifically)? And also for my son to bring his into Maryland

My son just moved up there and has a handgun that he already purchased after becoming a pennsylvania resident (formerly Maryland resident).

All I really want to do is go to shooting ranges with him both in Maryland and Pennsylvania but certainly don't want to break any laws in the process.
Thanks for your help

This is my understanding of the laws, but I'm not a lawyer. However you may want to check with both LE jurisdictions first. You can take your handgun to Pa by having it unloaded in a guncase in the trunk. The ammo should be seperate, say in another container in the back seat. As for your son he can do the same in the same manner to come to Md. The sticky part is if he plans to move here or stay more than 90 days.

Agreed. That is how my husband moved his when we left Maryland. Separate containers, and the gun in an inaccessible area.

Maryland law states that when you are transporting a firearm it needs to be unloaded and enclosed in either a case or a holster. Having the ammo seperate is a good idea, but not required.

You can only carry it in the vehicle for certain reasons. Going to a gun range is one of them. Make sure to remove it from the vehicle when you are no longer going to and from the range.

This is a good point - you are basically allowed to transport firearms from your house to the range, to a gunsmith, to a purchaser and to a "collector's event" which is poorly defined. If you stop and get gas in MD or stop to eat with a gun in the car, then technically you are committing a felony.

That would be a real stretch to make an arrest off of if the person's final destination is the range or another place where transporting a handgun is allowed. The majority of police are pro 2nd amendment so as long as your intentions are good, discretion most likely will be shown for those who might not follow the law exactly how it is written.

And having a handgun in a vehicle is a misdemeanor offense, not a felony.

If you (leave the gun and car unattended when f'rinstace you do something like) stop to eat..
then technically you are committing a felony.
That unattended part being the key factor.

It's the technicality that gets their toe in the door.
