None of these traits are found in Washington, Frederick, or Carroll Counties. Washington and Frederick Counties have some mountainous areas, but are dominated by large fertile valleys (Carroll county has no mountains, it is rolling farm country.) These same GOP Central Maryland counties are growing in population and have income levels about average for the state as they are commutable locations.

I don't want to be outvoted by NIMBY exurbanites anymore than I want to be outvoted by closer-in suburbanites. They can both do us a favor though and stop misusing our moniker.
Here is a response from the "real" Western Maryland county officials.

Local officials concerned about secession movement » Local News » Cumberland Times-News

This idea isn't coming from Western Maryland, it is coming from a dude living in Carroll County and working in Baltimore County. I wish he would stop using our regional name for his cause. He makes some good points........but secession isn't a realistic option and the time would be better spend trying to explain rural Marylander's issues with top-down governing and working to twart the momentum towards more centralized state control.

So it says many residents of Garrett COunty and Alleghany don't even get Maryland news that they get TV from Pittsburgh. So they were left out of the loop with the IADA, the nanny state laws, the rain tax, other taxes, the death penalty repeal, gay marriage etc that goes against their rural values.

Well, Alleghany County probably heard very little about what was going on in Maryland since they are down in the VA mountains.

Now ALLEGANY County, MD does get D.C., PA and Baltimore channels. When you get out to Garrett, most of the channels are from PA.

I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Folks up here are well aware of what is going on downstate with taxes, regulations, etc. It just doesn't sit well that some commuter from Carroll County has decided to start a "Western Maryland Secession" movement without consulting any of the elected officials in Western Maryland.

It wont happen, wish it did and normal people got representation to compensate like DC getting representation. Love how Western Maryland loves to suck at the Moco and Hoco teat yet get mad about social issues, very adorable :O

This pipe dream isn't coming from us. It is some dude who works in Baltimore County, and lives in Carroll County who is stealing our region's name and attaching it to his angst.

It makes me feel a bit miffed too.

What happens if the federal government does move out of Washington, D.C.? Who knows?

Yet people sure like to talk on and on about things that will never come to pass in their lifetimes. lol.

Click on the following link, and read the second "Older article" entitled "Why Baltimore is not Detroit," Sept 27, 2013.

http://www.gazette.net/section/blairlee/20130927

It explains how just about all Baltimore City services are maintained out of general Maryland funds: for instance, the city School system, the City Jail, all social services programs, the City Community College, the Orioles and Ravens stadiums, the Concert hall, Convention center, the Hippodrome, the Lyric Theater, Center Stage, the Light-rail, Subway, and City bus system, port facilities, the Aquarium expansion, science center, the Zoo, the Airport, City Libraries, all city road and bridge maintenance, etc. are/were paid for by taxpayers statewide. By contrast, Detroit, MI does not have such a generous state government, hence has gone bankrupt.

Blair Lee, I believe, is the son of a former Acting Governor of MD.
