What would be some of the most safest and non-discriminating cities to live in Maryland?

Do you mean other than the urban and older suburban areas in and immediately around DC and Baltimore?
Or were you looking for some sort of rural experience?

Like everyone else relocating... start with the job offer(s) and work out from there.
It'll be OK.

I agree, settle where you could find a job first. However, Takoma Park in the DC area has many lesbian families. While you might be surrounded by similar families, the crime rate is typical of urban areas. Columbia offers the suburban amenities of a planned city, but parts of it have a higher crime rate. If you are looking for small town "safety", you might look at Westminster, Sykesville or Mt Airy. Maryland officially has non-discrimination in housing, but you still might get a few odd looks in Mt Airy.

I'm not in a lesbian family, but my husband and I are white and our daughter (who we adopted) is biracial. We ended up in Ellicott City. Its VERY diverse. I think you'd be welcomed and your daughter would not be the only child of color pretty much anywhere in Howard County. I have heard that Montgomery County is the same way, but I don't know first hand. I know there are pockets of families like yours in certain Baltimore neighborhoods but I have never lived in the city so I cannot speak on that.

I would say the best place would be pretty much anywhere in Montgomery County. Takoma Park would probably be the most ideal, but the reality is the entire county is really great. You would be happy in Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, etc. I have bi-racial friends who grew up in these areas. The question with montgomery county is what you can afford, and how much you value walkable communities. Personally I think Takoma Park is great, and you would probably love it (most people who live in the area do). But its not your only option.

In general Maryland suburbs are a good place to live, and you will in no way feel out of place wherever you might end up.

I live in Crofton, and it is very GBT friendly here. Just don't live in the South River High district of Crofton, that school is not very racially or LGBT friendly. Severna Park is a very "homophobe" area. The Arundel High area of Crofton is nice. As someone mentioned earlier, Columbia, MD is very LGBT friendly.

Problem with your post is this... depends.

For example, where I live, I love the area... never hear neighbors, kids are respectful, no music around me... silence.

My neighbors on the other side can't wait to leave... they hate the area... says neighbors are loud and rude, kids are azzes, and people play loud music when driving by (they live facing the street). We live in the same building... go figure.

Point is that you can live next to hateful people and hate your experience or you can meet great people no matter where you live. One person next door can ruin it or make it great.

I would not care about you are the person you are with... but if you play your music at 1 am, I won't like you... not because of who you are with, but because I think you are an a-hole.

I don't think you will have a problem anywhere in Maryland except parts of Baltimore City and PG County where some black residents don't really approve of interracial relationships. Just because Maryland voted for gay marriage doesn't mean that reflects all of the state, but if you are worried about hate crimes, your house being vandalized, violence etc that will not happen.

You are more likely to be a victim of a regular crime, and for that reason, I would say avoid Baltimore City, PG County, Wheaton, Randallstown, and the parts of Catonsville inside Interstate 695.

Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. My neighborhood in Adelphi including Hyattsville, College Park, Brentwood, Mt. Rainier, Beltsville, Laurel, etc. are all welcoming to lesbians and biracial children and are relatively safe areas to live. Within the last 5 years on my block alone, 4 gay couples moved in. One white couple adopted a black child, and then the male spouse became transgendered. Talk about unique lifestyle situations. Neighbors have not complained. They are all great neighbors. Fact is, most of my neighbors are now white gay couples (men and women). Must be word of mouth. But I doubt they would move here if it was unfriendly to gays and biracial children and unsafe. I also think it's a safe bet that they are accepted in other areas of PG county as well. In terms of safety, not all of PG is like Chicago or Detroit.
