Hello all,

I may be taking a job in Columbia Maryland, and I know very little about the area so I figured this is a good place to start. Curious to know the best places to live in a 20 mile radius. Here's my background and what I'm looking for.

I'm 30, male, single, looking for something not too expensive, I don't need a really NICE place at all, would like to stay $1000 or below, studio is fine. If the area is good, I'd like to be close to Maryland Live Casino, and also close to the beach. I've lived in New Jersey my whole life.

Any recommendations? Suggestions? Advice?

Thanks in advance.

Well, the budget of $1000 won't get you anything much in Columbia, so I'd suggest looking at Hanover where the "Maryland Live Casino" is. I'd suggest upping your budget to $1100, or you will be in a less desirable area.

As a young person, you might be more interested in living in Baltimore. Please check the Baltimore sub-forum for some of the recommended neighborhoods.

BTW, the beach is at least 2.5 hours away regardless of where you live in Howard, Anne Arundel County or Baltimore, so that criterion doesn't much matter.

Is it a rough commute from Baltimore to Columbia?

Not really, because it is a reverse commute. It's maybe 30-40 minutes.

No. it can be done in 20 minutes via 95 without driving like a maniac.

As for where to live, you can probably find a studio for that price but Columbia is not really big on apartment complexes and those that are here tend to house the "lower-end of Columbia's residents".

A lot of people move here temporarily: military personnel working at Fort Meade, Korean students studying at Howard Community College, and so on. What is more common around here than apartments is for home owners to rent out rooms or entire basements, either of which you could find for $1000/month or less.

I'd be happy to rent you a spare bedroom for $800. Wife won't be thrilled but we'll just tell her you are a cousin. Probably be 2-3 months before she catches on.

Still juggling between Baltimore and Columbia. I think for the sake of a quick commute I'll stay towards Columbia...Baltimore and DC are close enough. I'd like to at least have some cool places to go in the area so any town suggestions I can look at other than Hanover? I'm gonna take a trip out and scope out as much as I can, but am open to suggestions of those that already live there.

Thanks

Come to think of it, there are a good number of apartments on the other side of 29, between Howard Community College and Wilde Lake. Or around Columbia Mall.

You might be able to find something over there. Keep in mind that a lot of what looks like apartment complexes around here are actually condos/town homes. Some might be mixed. Also, some condo/town home owners rent their homes out as...rentals (obviously).

You can find cheaper in Baltimore.

You can also look in Ellicott City, but you might not find anything cheaper than Columbia. There is also Cantonsville.

You can also look in Jessup and North Laurel. It'll be hit-or-miss, though, but cheaper.

If you work in Columbia, I don't see a reason to leave the Columbia area, especially if you are single. Other than Baltimore/DC, there's lots going on in Columbia. The Casino area is fun too, military heavy just fyi because you are closer to the base in that area.

Thanks for the replies, Laurel has been suggested to me by a friend to start looking at so I will begin there and check out the surrounding area.
