Not really, because it is a reverse commute. It's maybe 30-40 minutes.

No. it can be done in 20 minutes via 95 without driving like a maniac.
As for where to live, you can probably find a studio for that price but Columbia is not really big on apartment complexes and those that are here tend to house the "lower-end of Columbia's residents".
A lot of people move here temporarily: military personnel working at Fort Meade, Korean students studying at Howard Community College, and so on. What is more common around here than apartments is for home owners to rent out rooms or entire basements, either of which you could find for $1000/month or less.

Still juggling between Baltimore and Columbia. I think for the sake of a quick commute I'll stay towards Columbia...Baltimore and DC are close enough. I'd like to at least have some cool places to go in the area so any town suggestions I can look at other than Hanover? I'm gonna take a trip out and scope out as much as I can, but am open to suggestions of those that already live there.

Come to think of it, there are a good number of apartments on the other side of 29, between Howard Community College and Wilde Lake. Or around Columbia Mall.

If you work in Columbia, I don't see a reason to leave the Columbia area, especially if you are single. Other than Baltimore/DC, there's lots going on in Columbia. The Casino area is fun too, military heavy just fyi because you are closer to the base in that area.
