My family and I are preparing to make a move to Southern, MD. We are trying to figure out the best areas in or around St. Mary's and Calvert County. We are looking to be within reasonably close distance (20-30 minutes at most) from the PAX River Naval Base, but are more concerned with buying a home in the best area we can afford. I have done a bit of research and Leonardtown seems like a tight knit community that offers a lot of activities and family fun for the locals. Is this accurate? I've also read good things about Huntington…and I've been looking at homes in Piney Point. We are looking to have water access or be on the water. Feeling a bit overwhelmed in my search. Seeking information and opinions on the aforementioned areas and the best and most convenient living locales in Southern Maryland. We are very excited about the move and appreciate any help/information from locals or those familiar with Calvert and St Mary's Counties.

Thanks so much!!!

On the water? What's in your wallet?

Calvert arguably has the better school system.

St. Mary's is much more rural, although southern Calvert holds its own in that regard.

Huntingtown is outside your commute time parameters.

We have a budget of course, but we're coming from out of state…California, Bay Area, which is extremely costly. Unfortunately, you get far less for your money where we live. I have seen some homes on the water in Piney Point that are within our budget.

I apologize, I hadn't checked the distance of Huntington from the Pax River Naval Station. It is definitely too far away from where we need to be for my husband's job.

So is Leonardtown our all around best option? Any recommendations?

Hi Ckiel. My family and I are scheduled to make the move to southern Maryland as well (coming from san diego though) and was wondering what area you decided on moving to? We're having a hard time figuring out where to move (he'll be stationed at pax naval) and won't get a chance to check out Maryland beforehand.
