Seven Oaks (AKA Seven JOKES) has had a seedy rep for a long time. Re-sales can take a long time based on a friends experience there. WHY, take a drive over & see some of your potential neighbors, you may have second thoughts???

Seven Oaks is more part of the Fort Meade CDP than Odenton. It is practically in front of the base. It even feeds into the Meade schools. It just has an Odenton mailing address. Seven Oaks is not a bad area at all. In fact, it seems pretty decent to me. A lot of the homes there are newly built and are near a bunch of shopping. One of my new colleagues lives in Seven Oaks and said it is a very safe and nice community to live in. It is a lot less expensive than Piney Orchard and Waugh Chapel. My colleague even said it is within walking distance to Fort Meade in some places. So I think if you like Seven Oaks, go for it.

One of the first considerations I will be making when choosing where to live will be exactly this. Isn't it what most people do anyway?

I've lived in the Seven Oaks apartment community for the past two years and I am well into my third year here. As someone mentioned earlier, "Pioneer City" is a disadvantaged and impoverished community just north of the Seven Oaks area. Shady characters from this area will often venture into Seven Oaks to cause mischief but I haven't had any problems and I haven't heard of any major problems in my immediate area. That being said, a robbery or assault takes place fairly often along RT 175 which parallels Fort Meade and hugs the Seven Oaks area. I subscribe to updates provided by www.spotcrime.com and it seems that a business along the strip nearest to Fort Meade gets "hit" every other week. By hit I mean robbery. Based on these updates I am speculating that the folks from Pioneer City are to blame, again, speculating and I have no proof, and I believe that they are expanding their area of operations and are the same folks who cause trouble in Piney Orchard and beyond. Best advice, like someone already said, check with the housing office on post first, check GreatSchools and SpotCrime. Btw, Pioneer City is off limits to military personnel as are some business establishments in the area surrounding Fort Meade. You'll receive those details when you report. Good luck and welcome to the area!

Let's make it a bit less politically correct. Pioneer City/Jacobs Road area is like a little piece of Cherry Hill in your back yard. I lived in Seven Oaks for a bit in a townhome off of Charter Oaks Blvd. In that time, I had my car broken into, someone attempt to kick down my door, and more "solicitors" casing the area for breakins than I care to think about now.

It's not a good area to raise a family in. The schools suck, the immediate area isn't on the upswing, and you get at best a transient set of neighbors who tend to be E3-E5s stuck at Ft Meade for a few years. If you're going to be in Maryland for a longer haul, look at either living further away from the fort/DC/Balt or up your budget to move into one of the more suburban areas, especially if you're going to be raising kids.

Odenton is fine. I live in Seven Oaks and love it. We bought a beautiful townhouse and the area is safe. We have people who jog during the day and in the evenings with no problem. We have had neighbors who have had deliveries left on their porch for days and was there when they returned from vacation. The community centers and pools are well maintained and great. I have been here for 12 years.
