How many AACPS teachers are leaving? (loans, houses, transfer)

I'm leaving to teach in Howard County. How many other teachers are leaving because of no raises here for the foreseeable future?

I have no clue but the no raise issue is pretty widespread across the whole state.

Also remember, your pension won't carry over to Howard and the clock will start again there. It now takes ten years to be vested in the State Retirement System if you're a teacher.

HoCo is getting a 6% raise across the board and I'll be making 10K more then 2K more the next year then 2K more the next. I need money now not when I'm 65--and unfortunately for people like myself, I haven't been able to save because of school loans. There are a lot of teachers leaving, so I hear, so just wanted to see how many chime in here. Anne Arundel is horrible compared to other counties.

That doesn't sound right...about the pension. I'm a MD state public school teacher with 13 years experience in the state system. Pension doesn't start over if you switch counties! that's the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. That can't be right!

Each school system is a separate account in the system. Pension seniority doesn't transfer. There have been changes to it all through the O' Malley years.

I have 30 years teaching in MD.

Better let the Prince George's and Calvert County system's HR people know since they're the ones who told me. As well as my oldest daughter who lost hers when she transferred.

And it may be "one system" but each jurisdiction has their own plan. There are even different plans within jurisdictions.

My HR just told me here in Anne Arundel...it's all Maryland. I don't understand I guess. I don't understand how you could have x years experience in one county, then have to start over from ONE if you move to another county in the same state? That makes no sense. I was also informed by my union rep that I don't start over--I carry my years with me. So maybe she DOES need to inform PG and CC's HR! It just doesn't sound right. ANyone else know the rules?

I'm pretty sure it rolls over from county to county, as long as you stay in the state of MD. It may be more of a question of "being vested".

A better question is why is AA one of the lowest counties in the region when it comes to pay. I think the main reason is taxes and cost of living are considerably lower than most counties in this area. AA is one of the lowest average income counties in the region as well.

My wife is a teacher in AA county. I'm sure we could use a 10k raise in her salary, but keep in mind, Howard County's income tax is 1% higher, housing in Howard County can be 10-25% higher for the same house (that's a lot when houses start at 400-600k), property taxes will be higher and if you choose to live and AA and commute, then you will have higher commuting costs and less time at home.

Having said that, I do agree, it's time for AA county to stop the salary freeze and find a way to at least give some sort of raises. I'm just not sure it needs to keep up with places like Montgomery and Howard Counties.
