My husband just got a job offer that is great, but I don't know anything about Maryland. He will be working in Upper Marlboro and we're looking at places to rent (at first) east or northeast of that. We have a 5th grader and 9th grader. What areas are best?

Why those compass points?

I would tell you to look South or Southeast instead.

I have no idea why those compass points LOL What do you suggest? I guess I wanted to be between his work and Annapolis. Totally open to suggestions.

The school system which encompasses Upper Marlboro is Prince George's County (my employer for 30 years). Its new theme is "Great By Choice". It's also the second lowest rated system in MD.

Tangent-no one mention ERHS, it's a non-issue for right now for her.

Calvert County might be a better choice if you're looking at schools.

Crofton is a great area located in between Upper Marlboro and Annapolis.

WA State Mom - The problem with looking North and East is that you are looking into the same areas as people that commute into the Baltimore and Washington Metro areas to work. This increases the cost. In General people look 'outward' from the center of the DC area from where they work to lower the housing costs.

North Beach Person probably has the best handle on School systems on that side of town ( I live North and west of DC in Frederick County and have little dealings with the school systems down there). From the little I know about PG County schools I agree that the entire county system has been involved in an uphill fight for years and I'm not sure if they are making any progress or even holding their own.

When did Crofton get moved to between Upper Marlboro and Annapolis? I've always though it was between Baltimore and Annapolis.

Yes, its not **exactly** in the middle of the two; it is however in a decent commutable location to both cities. I assumed that was what the OP was looking for...

Crofton, Gambrills, Odenton, and Davidsonville are all areas to look at if schools are a priority.
