Montgomery County will be the most diverse/progressive region of the state. The options available to you depend on your budget, but downtown Silver Spring and Takoma Park, specifically, might fit the bill.

I will second Takoma Park as very friendly to LGBT families, and multi- or bi-racial families.

What's your budget? Saying the "maryland" area is like saying you wanna move to New Jersey. We both know that's a pretty large swath of land. Why are you moving here?

I also suggest areas in Howard County like Columbia, Elkridge, or Ellicott City.
