Are the plans for it to be a hotel or are they repurposing it?

OK, read the article. It looks as if they have some plans but they're not real firm.

As far as subsidized housing goes, a building like that is going to be incredibly expensive to rehab so the numbers for ROI on subsidized likely aren't there.

They're planning classrooms and student apartments, but that's a massive building. I assume that there will be some space left over. Hopefully they don't sacrifice the quality of tenants for the quantity of tenants.

The former Hotel Alexander (that massive building on Hagerstown's square) is often a point of contention for many Hagerstown residents. The bottom few floors are often space, but people also live in the building (many of whom aren't exactly ideal tenants).

After a holiday up, Hagerstown’s City Farmers Market down again

Despite efforts to re-energize Hagerstown's historic City Farmers Market in recent months, it seems to be on a downturn again, according to city Councilman Kristin B. Aleshire.

During a Hagerstown City Council work session on Jan. 10, Aleshire said that the market on West Church Street is down to about five or six vendors.

He said that the city-operated market is as "noticeably empty" as it was before pop-up shops in the building helped give it a boost over the holidays.

I can't figure out why Hagerstown has such a hard time with the Farmer's Market. Attracting young professionals to live and work downtown would certainly help its cause, but that seems like a long-term plan. Pennsylvania Dutch Market on the North side of town is usually busy on Saturdays, so maybe that's where people get their fix of farmer's markets. Martinsburg has a farmer's market (aptly named Martinsburg Farmer's Market). Chambersburg has two; one indoor and one outdoor (Jim's Farmer's Market and North Square Farmer's Market, respectively).

Pact proposed for Hagerstown downtown-renewal project

The proposed project includes additional classroom space for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, expansion of the theater, program space for the university and an outdoor plaza behind those buildings.

Responsibilities spelled out in the agreement include financial commitments.

Under the deal, the county would manage development of the outdoor plaza, while the school board would maintain the interior of a pedestrian bridge to be built between the high-school classroom building and a structure to house university programming.

The latter building also is expected to house laboratory classrooms and dining space high-school students can use.
