Depends on what you're willing to spend. Metro allows you to live in $1.5M townhouses, or $500K single family homes, or anything in between.

I am not looking to buy a home. I am looking to RENT. I am taking a job with the government as I will be working for the US Attorney Genera's office. I have no intention on moving until I can afford to buy a house. I know I don't want to live in Baltimore and I don't know how it is in DC. From what I have read DC with a kid is not the place to be!

ZLS, a buddy of mine used to live in Crystal City, on the edge of DC I guess. anyway, his apt. had a Safeway underneath the building, and it was 3 blocks to a metro. Have no idea what he paid, I'm guessing big bucks. Worth mentioning... I guess. lol

Oh yeah, forgot to mention... I'd HIGHLY recommend Silver Spring area as well. I grew up in that area and the schools are still great. In addition, condos and townho.... Wait a sec! My sister has a townhouse up for rent in Rockville... walking distance to Red-Line Metro. I think about $2,400 for th whole place. AWESOME neighboorhood, next to the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Calvert County schools are a close second to Montgomery county, but it is a much more rural setting and a bit more of a commute. You would probably have to drive to a metro, park, and then go to work (or take a commuter bus).
