The South does not begin until area codes 540 or 804.

So glad this thread got bumped. If there is one thing we haven't dug into deeply enough here it is Maryland's regional identity.

There are still many people who consider Baltimore/Maryland Southern, and there are many who don't. The Census still officially classifies it as Southern. There will never be full consensus, as some will continue to classify it as Southern.

..........as it has always been it depends where in Maryland you are (or live).People in Charles ,Calvert and especialy St,Mary's counties feel a closer connection to VA which is considered a "southern state".

Not to mention the lower Eastern Shore especially.

Exactly. Ive never been to Charles, Calvert, or St Mary's counties, but I can see why they could be considered southern if they're anything like Prince George's. It's Baltimore being considered southern that I scratch my head over

I completely agree with you. MD has officially always been classified as a Southern state and outside of the Baltimore-Washington corridor it still aligns with the South. Many people on this site don't like it when people bring that up. They don't want to be associated with the South in any way.

If you're classifying the state as a whole, I still like Mid-Atlantic as a definition even though that's not an official region (and there are hundreds of different definitions for that) since it's a border state and the most populous region isn't stereotypically "northern" or "southern" while the rest of the state leans southern (although those who don't want to be associated with the south will say the western part of the state is "Appalachian"). Basically it's technically a Southern state that is a transition area.

Let them stay in that backwards way of thinking.

Maryland is southern, particularly the Baltimore area, the Eastern Shore, and Western MD, which is the majority of the state. DC can be whatever it wants to be for all I care.

There's too much happening in the south to not want to be associated with it.

Western Maryland is Appalachian. How Southern you consider that part of Appalachia to be is the question.

I agree the state as a whole could be considered southern, but Baltimore, seriously??
Maybe in the 1840s, sure, but less than 100 years later it had shifted to a major manufacturing center and a DESTINATION black families in the Great Migration, which are more characteristic of a northern city. Besides, the Baltimore accent sounds more like a Philly accent than anything south of the Rappahannock
