And it begins!

John Delaney Is Already Running for President
By Maggie Astor

He is well aware that better-known Democratic politicians like Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. are attracting more news coverage even though they have not yet officially declared, and he knows that even though he is the only major candidate running right now, he is running from behind.

Biden, Delaney, and Booker (in that order) are all good choices in the view of this moderate Democrat.

Never heard of him. But then again, I had never heard of Barack Obama 2 years before the 2008 election either, so that proves nothing. (Apparently, Obama gave a well-regarded speech before then, but apparently I must have missed it.)

He's an outgoing US Congressman representing Maryland (6th Congressional district). If you "never heard of him," it may be that you don't pay attention to your elected officials.

Most people can't name their own Congressman let alone one not in their District, which, curiously enough, Delaney did not live in when he was in Congress.

Hoyer, Harris, Sarbanes, Brown, Cummings, Delaney, Ruppersberger are the only ones I can name from Maryland, so I'm missing one.

I looked, I missed Raskin.

No one who represents the 6th District is "my" elected official, because I don't live there.

I live in the 7th District. I could walk across the street and be in the 3rd District. I could then keep walking another few blocks and be in the 2nd District. My immediate neighborhood happens to be situated at the confluence of three narrow district channels, far removed from the center of gravity of any of them. Do you think that any of those congressmen have any sense of who they are supposedly representing in my "fringe" area, or even care? On paper, I'm represented by Elijah Cummings. But in reality, I'm represented by no one.

I think James Garfield was the last successful presidential candidate to come directly from the House. It just doesn't happen that often.

Considering the current POTUS' pedigree, I don't think anything in politics will ever surprise me again. President Kim Kardashian could name a lawn chair EPA Administrator and I'd shrug my shoulders.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Delaney lives in Bethesda (when not in Iowa), that may be over the line, but close to the boundary of the sixth.

I think he seems like a very good centrist candidate.
