I just scheduled my appointment for next month (quite a wait for these). One thing I like is you need proof of identification like a passport or birth certificate along with valid proof of a Maryland residency.

It’s a pain for some. If your current name doesn’t match the one on your birth certificate, you have to provide documented proof of a legal name change. So, for example, my wife is getting ready to see if Delaware can produce a copy of her 50 year old marriage certificate to her first husband.

I just did it yesterday and yes it's a pain . You need............

1) current Licence

2) Two social ID's. meaning a passport and SS card ,....they never looked at my Birth certificate .

3) Two things such as a Utility Bill with your current name and address on it . They accepted my bank statement and car registration.

...........My appointment was for 9 I was in line at 8 and that was a good 60 people in front of me at the Waldorf DMV which opens at 8:30 am. Once you find the right line and get a slip with your appointment on it from the desk it took a few mins to be called once at the counter the girl scans your documents gives you a confirmation sheet and your done ,I was in the car and gone by 9:05 am.

If you have the new license, you should still check the MVA website to determine whether you need to bring the documents in even if you didn’t receive a notice. We did this and I was fine, but my husband needs to present his documents by December. If you don’t update it, an officer can take your license on the spot if you are stopped after the deadline set for you. Note: if you still have the old license, you won’t be able to use it as ID to fly or enter federal buildings (when required) after October 1, 2020.

If you have the star in a circle in the upper left corner you are 'RealID Compliant' meaning they have vetted your documents

Do you mean upper right? I hope you do, because I have a star there.

Because I was a veteran the new card, good until my BD in 2020, cost nothing. It was a nice surprise.
The even better news is that I can renew next just before August 2020, via online. I won't have to face the brutal lines at the MVA. It might be worth it for the wife to pay the $20 to get her real ID now, when she can get in at a slow period, and do the same thing when she has to renew at the same time.

Gotta hand it to the MVA, my appointment is tomorrow morning and so far I got a reminder Email last week, a call this morning and another reminder Email just now. I wish my dentist would be this good sending out reminder notices.
