I wonder if Miller has enough influence remaining to be the kingmaker.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...127_story.html

Quote:
Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. — the country’s longest serving Senate president — has scheduled a meeting with Democrats on Thursday at which he is expected to announce whether he will continue to preside over the chamber.

...

The Senate succession battle started quietly, with Miller’s blessing, during the 90-day session that ended in April. It has only ramped up over the past several weeks as lawmakers became increasingly concerned about Miller’s health.

“People are not only jockeying for the Senate president’s seat, but they are jockeying for other positions, too,” said one senator. “They want to be chair or vice chair — all of that is a part of what people are considering.”

As many as five Democrats have explored a run for Senate president since Miller announced his cancer diagnosis in January. They include Pinsky, Bill Ferguson of Baltimore City, Guy J. Guzzone of Howard County, Nancy J. King of Montgomery County and Douglas J.J. Peters of Prince George’s County.

Oh, he has enough influence. My early money is on Peters. He represents what used to be Miller's district before it was moved south into Calvert.

A couple of the contenders are too "new" and, at least at one time, Miller and Pinsky didn't get along well. If I remember correctly Pinsky was one of the leaders several years ago who tried to unseat Miller.

It appears Ferguson, a 36-year old Baltimore city resident, has won the race to succeed Mike Miller. I'm surprised that someone so young could leap over more experienced, better connected and older senators. It also shifts power back in the General Assembly back to Baltimore city. I imagine the southern counties couldn't get their act together in retaining control of both the House and the Senate.

Marvin Mandel is still alive... right?
He was a pretty good one (for the most part).

No, Mandel died in 2015.

Miller is not leaving the Senate, his term goes until 2022, he's just giving up being President of the Senate. If anybody thinks he won't continue to be very influential, depending on his health, behind the scenes (meaning getting grants, pushing legislation, awarding bond bill money) doesn't understand how the Maryland Legislature works.

I can almost guarantee that Ferguson was his pick and no one else's.

You saw what happened when Busch died. Those Delegates were knifing each other right, left and sideways.

Ferguson is an imbecile and far more liberal than Miller. Glad I'm getting out of this dump soon.

Ferguson is from Montgomery County and taught for a couple years in Baltimore city public schools as a Teach for America recruit. Paul Pinsky supported his appointment. So, Ferguson probably has a progressive agenda. I'm surprised Miller would select him as his successor.
