I know that you can get fined for driving uninsured or unregistered but I didn’t know that they that mva would fine me after I sold my car if I did not return the tags the same days I cancelled my insurance otherwise I would have done so. It’s also timing that causes me to turn my plate 9 days later. They should at least give 30 days to return plate without insurance because like I said I didn’t want to pay for a car that I did not physical have anymore so there was no reason of keeping insurance on it. They should write that somewhere so that a person like me knows because like I said that has never happened to me which is ridiculous or atleast my auto insurance should have told me because insurance was a lot cheaper then paying that $150 one time fee. I had been a customer with geico for I think 6 yrs or 7 yrs and my accounts are current with them and with all my bills.

Yeah I was made aware of this too when I changed cars. It makes sense, the MVA has to try to stop people from driving an uninsured vehicles and this is really one of the best ways. They can't be expected to look into every case to see when the vehicle has actually been taken off the road so they just made it a rule. It's an expensive lesson but again the agent should have let you know as mine did, the frustration should go there and not directed at the MVA.

I guess I was lucky. Whenever I have taken a car off my policy may agent (or his admin) have always asked me when I turned the tags in. The last couple times they also asked for the receipt number. He said that they have had one or two times that the client had said they turned them in and months later MVA said they hadn't. This way the proof is in a file to protect both the client and him. He has never had a lot of faith in MVA getting things right the first time.

You know you are right. I drive my cars into the ground, then sell them to a junk yard. I had to send my insurance company that receipt and the MVA receipt before they would cancel the insurance.

It's the MVA. I got this for my BMW that I sold last month. Turned in the tags, got the receipt, got paid on the remainder of the registration, cancelled the insurance and bam, they hit me with the same thing and no one is there to do anything about it now. In the past if you showed them the tag return receipt and the bill of sale, they have no problem with taking care of it. But with no one in the office, you can't show them, you can't FAX them, and you can't MAIL them any information. But the automated system keeps on going...

THIS.

I still can't believe people don't know this. It's common sense.

Even better.

Something my Father drilled into my head when I was a child. ALWAYS ASK FOR A RECEIPT!

That sounds like a glitch as you did it correctly. This is not the same as the OP who didn't know to turn in the tags first.

Still glitching. I just got a letter in the mail that my registration for that car is suspended! OH, no! I won't be able to register the car again! Dummies. They already have the plates and paid me the overage!

And still no one responds to the faxes or emails I've sent with the scans of the proof that the car was sold AND they got the tags back! And the phone still hangs up when you get through the phone tree saying all offices are closed...
