This thread happened to be on top. When I lived in Maryland, Western MD and the Eastern Shore were my favorite parts of the state. Its unfortunate what the state of Maryland has become honestly. I do have many memories of visiting Cumberland and also going to Deep Creek Lake back when I lived in Baltimore County.

I lived in Maryland years ago and the thing is that Maryland's state government is controlled by the DC suburbs and Baltimore City and their policies hurt Western Maryland. For example, Maryland has very strict "smart growth" and "high density development" rules that MIGHT make sense in Montgomery County but economically hinder cities like Cumberland where they're not allowed to expand businesses and residential areas. There was a major housing development in Alleghany County a few years back that was blocked by the state, which would have brought new growth and jobs to the area.

Also keep in mind that regardless of what happens on the federal level, Western Maryland will never be able to benefit from the coal and natural gas that neighboring parts of West Virginia and Pennsylvania have because of government overregulation on the state level. Cumberland sits on the Marchellus Shale just like Western PA and West Virginia yet they're not allowed to do fracking which has brought tremendous economic growth to neighboring areas. Basically the area has the potential to see a massive economic boom from developing its natural resources, but isn't allowed to because that would offend the liberal sensibilities of the liberal elites in Bethesda and Potomac.

Cumberland would have much more potential if it wasn't in Maryland.

Morgantown, West Virginia is less than an hour to the west with similar mountain scenery, plus a better economy.
Pennsylvanians want fracking to end.

Quote:

PITTSBURGH — A clear majority of Pennsylvania voters (55 percent) say they upport the immediate or eventual end of natural gas drilling, also known as fracking, in the commonwealth, according to a recent poll commissioned by the sustainably minded think tank Ohio River Valley Institute.

A quarter of the respondents (25 percent) to the poll conducted by the progressive polling firm Data for Progress say that fracking should end as soon as possible, and another 30% of Pennsylvanians say it should be phased out over time. Only 31% of Pennsylvania voters support maintaining fracking in the state, according to the poll.

For the last several years, fracking has been a political lightning rod in Pennsylvania, particularly the Greater Pittsburgh region, which is home to the most natural gas drilling in the state.

Quote:
Lives disrupted by leasing land: “One of the things that [people who leased their land for fracking] didn’t really recognize was how much autonomy they would lose over their own estate: guards telling you that you can’t access your own driveway at certain hours because the trucks are moving in; people you don’t recognize; gas companies setting up trailer camps for people to live on while they’re drilling not only your own well, but even your neighbors’ wells, since they could still use your property as a staging area. There were all these ways that people didn’t really understand how much they were turning over their property to the gas companies, who could then tell you what you could and couldn’t do.” (12:59)
