My husband and I are first time home buyers. We are looking at house priced 175k and below. On 6/9 we found a house we fell in love with and put in our offer the same night now today 6/10 we got a message from the seller saying that there has been another offer submitted that is "much better than ours" andd asked for us to put in our best and highest offer. Are we really in a bidding war. Also the listing agent is also the person who owns the house. Location Baltimore County

Probably. Real estate market is very competitive in some places with rates so low and many cash buyers.

Just offer what you want to pay - and see what happens. It's not a "bidding war" - sellers obviously want as high a price as possible - just make sure you have the money/financing and it's solid.

Sounds unethical for a realtor to tell you that. Ask them to show you the other offer and see what happens. I call B.S.

The OP may be better off. I mean much of that area is meh, and is not in the Dundalk area.

I know somebody that lives in part of the city who's house is worth about 160K and it's an awful area. Belvedere and Edison.

People that think you are getting a lot of house in these areas are amazing. I mean......you ever heard of the Bermuda Triangle?

If there's another offer -- then there's another offer. Realtors tell potential buyers that all the time. And the OP is getting a chance to make a higher bid. It's only unethical IF there's not really another bid. Then the agent is just lying.

It would be interesting to hear what happens if the OP asks to see the offer.
But, then again, IF the listing agent is also the owner/selling or the house....and unethical because she lied, then that person could also be unethical enough to draw up a phony off that doesn't really exist.

Or also just lie again -- and just say she can't show them the offer. And try to refuse the OP's offer, because now she thinks the OP is either a trouble maker -- or at minimum someone who she can just push around.

Ultimately, as with any potential buyer -- you have to know when you're willing to just walk away. And sometimes -- yes -- you dodge a bul let and end up being relieved and glad the deal didn't work out.
