Whoever works closest takes on the day to day family/household chores.

The other gets to have a miserable commute for as long as it takes to get some other job closer.
It seems a Maryland tradition to live as far away from your job as you can afford.

What's funny is people post on here that they are working in a particular area, and the area is also very nice to live in but they want to move 40+ miles away.

We didn't move that far but we did move out for a very simple reason. We worked in Montgomery County but a 5 acre property with a beautiful view was simply not affordable in Montgomery County. It was totally worth the 45 minute commute for me to live where we wanted to live.

That's because it's the DC metro and you wanted land.

I was referencing people that could afford it.

The OP could have possibly (Not sure, lot of professional jobs around here) landed a job in Towson, Timonium, Hunt Valley...........and her and her husband would have had a much easier commute, and it would have been MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE. AND EVERYTHING IS HERE.....

So it's either he changes his mind, or she changes hers. They probably have already and are headed for Idaho to farm potatoes.......

Some of the responses were not warranted, but I still hate it when people don't come back, to explain, expound, clarify, stand their ground, whatever. But don't just post and vanish.

Most responders were trying to be helpful.

IF she were to come back, with more of what's she's learned since the first post, we could have even better suggestions. Her loss at this point.

Agreed. When will I ever learn? But then again these threads where the OP disappears do tend to take on a life of their own and we have fun discussing things even if the OP isn't here anymore.

I still think it's crazy to suggest either find a new job. She is obviously happy enough with her company to relocate, few health care professionals would simply throw away an opportunity at Johns Hopkins. It's not like McLean is Woodbridge, the commute for both could be doable with a move to Montgomery County.

Those are long commutes but certainly for well paying jobs not a deal breaker.

Unfortunately, as others have indicated, there is no ideal location that will split a commute between Baltimore and McLean; especially given that Hopkins is pretty deep into Baltimore, so even once you hit the city of Baltimore there is going to a good amount of additional bump-and-go traffic. Additionally, you won't be able to avoid 495 on the McLean end.

Your best bet may be to actually live in the city of DC, since there are lots of transportation options to Baltimore, and it isn't a terrible commute to McLean from there. Although, if the husband is a medical profession, relying on a commute that long taking public transportation is not realistic (don't know any health care professionals who take public transportation for a commute that long- and it wouldn't work if there is any call involved). Another option may be some parts of PG County or maybe far north Montgomery County (although those aren't great options).

Columbia/Ellicott City are great and normal locations for people who work in Baltimore, but are nightmare commutes to McLean.
