Otoh, most of my co-workers are crossing the northern border into PA for retirement. They want to remain in the northeast and expect to pay higher property taxes for living in the northeast region. But they're happy their pensions won't be taxed by PA and that PA is a two party state.

MD's not a bad state. I just wouldn't want to live post career in the Baltimore-DC corridor. The problem is healthcare quality and options decrease the further you move away from the corridor
.
Does it? Really. Or is it more that you've become spoiled living here?

I can guarantee that had I had my heart attacks near here https://www.phhealthcare.org/service that the response, care and after care would have been exactly what I received here. I know many of the doctors and most went to the exact same medical schools the ones here (at least the US born ones) did.

The hospital linked is located in a fairly remote area in the northern tier of PA.

One thing rural doctors are real good at doing is knowing when they need to send someone to a more specialized facility.

What are you doing here? To the others SC has been one of my main contacts as I researched Tennessee, very helpful. As to your point one thing I did research was the distance from Maryville to the closest beach. It was 7 hours, here it's under 3 so that was a bummer.

As for health care in MD I do believe for advanced treatments the rural areas are limited, but in such a small state that still means only a few hours to Hopkins in Baltimore or DC.

Maryland has one of the best trauma air evac systems statewide in the country. Anywhere in the state has access to Trauma care within minutes.

Yes, that's one of the real upsides to the state's medical system.

But Tennessee provides all residents, 2 years of free community college, and trade school, tuition.

And my Uncle needed it living in Denton, although he never left the hospital again.

It's not just the treatment, it's the distance to it in an emergency.

I was not aware that Tennessee offered free tuition. Would not have applied to us but that's pretty interesting.

For our eventual downsize when this old farmhouse gets to be too much I'm now thinking Sykesville. The preference would be Frederick but too damn expensive.

MD offers up to $5000/annually for community college https://mhec.state.md.us/preparing/P...holarship.aspx

As for medical care: in 2018, AA county, we experienced an incident in which there was NO AA county ambulance available for an emergency situation. The wait for them to find a neighboring county that had an available ambulance was terrifying.

Now, imagine finally getting to AAMC (closest hospital that will take you) only to find they don't have a bed available. They admit you as inpatient (and bill you for it); but you spend close to 2 days in the ER, behind a curtain (no doors), listening to the chaos of the ER 24/7, while you're hooked up to 100% oxygen, iv's, and monitors.

Is this specific to AA county? MD? Can you find stats on ambulance availability or bed shortage for comparison?
