My wife and I are trying to escape from DC, we're looking at Frederick, but housing seems really high there.

Hagerstown seems like a better deal, but a quick drive through revealed some pretty sketchy neighborhoods. I'm sure there are some good historic areas that are safe, if anyone could give me a jump start on finding them I'd appreciate it.

I lived in Hagerstown for 2 years, if you are commuting to DC be wary!!! It is an almost 2 hour drive each way!!!! But besides that, stay away from the dontown areas. We lived on the west side and it was pretty nice. Also past the Walmart there are new developments as well. Williamsport is a good area.

If your going to focus on Hagersbush maybe you should consider Greencastle, Pa right off Exit 1 and 3 in Pa. just over the line. Gosh knows the taxes are better.
Williamsport is ok to, just don't venture over the WV line to Martinsburg my home town has really taken a dive over the years.

Also, if you feel Fredneck is too high then head a little further north on 15 to the Thurmont area. Beautiful there and less money.

Ditto everything Georgia said. I'm from the region, been to Greencastle many times...almost retired there...but finally chose Colorado for the dry summers and low humidity.

In Greencaslte you gotta eat at Mrs. Gibble, just 2 miles north of town. Real comfort food, pork chops, chicken livers, great food, nice people. They run a chocolate shop next door to it.....yummm.

Thurmont is lovely too, especially heading uphill towards Blue Ridge Summit.

If you're near retirement age....remember....PA does NOT tax most pensions, but you gotta watch those township taxes, good research is essential.

Ditto on the Gibbles! They did sell out though, but my father still enjoys it.
The Antrium House in G'Castle is nice and so is the Cozy in Thurmont.

Forgot to say that Emmitsburg is another nice area by Mt. Saint Mary. Can't miss the giant Madonna on the mountain.

Good Luck
