I am glad that you had a postive experience while living there and you are correct, it is a beautiful place (I did love seeing the mountains,etc...)
I wish that our experience was more welcoming.
As I said, we did meet some very kind, welcoming people, unfortunately for us, it was not the majority.
I do wish anyone who wishes to move there the best though, I would never attempt to sway someone from their decision.

NYMD67, I am sorry that you had a bad experience here. It's a wonderful county with lovely people. There are some bad apples, though, it sounds like you met some of them. Maybe you could give us a chance again sometime; we'd love to welcome you back to Carroll County.

Hi there! No problem at all. I wish you the best of luck and sorry to hear Carroll County didn't meet your satisfaction.

Yes, there are many small towns all over this country, we have lived in many, many of them. Northern Carroll County is by far, one of the most intolerant places there is.
Of course there are many kind ,wonderful people too, but honestly, if you are not white and are not from the area, it is not a place to raise a family.
Especially a diverse one.

Actually Carroll County has come a long way. It is more accepting to more diversity. I have lived there all my life and remember what it was like up until the early 1990's when changes started happening. Like I said there are a few who are set in their ways but majority are welcoming to new neighbors. Like Stripes indicated, it is all how one approaches the situations and their outlook on the area. If one is not going to like the area and down it, then, yes, the "locals" are going to look down on you.

You are correct, alot is in the attitude you go into something/someplace with.
For us, we went in to Carroll County on a reference from a very good friend, we loved the area, the mountains, the conveniences for the most part to just about anything,etc...
Unfortunately , once we got there, our positive attitude was tarnished by not just a few,but many, local people with insensitive remarks,actions,etc..
I will not go into specifics as we don't want to re-hash things that occured, but this was as recent as 2005. So, for us, ignorance was all around and we chose to leave. It was not because we went into Carroll County expecting things to change for us,or because we were being negative.
We.Were.Discriminated.Against. Period.
As I said, I am happy that others find it to be a welcoming, beautiful place, and I completely agree that yes, it is beautiful and I wish that we could have made it our home.
Please don't disregard others experiences though by insinuating that all who do not come out feeling positive are looking for negative, because in our case, the opposite was the case.

If I may ask, what town did you or do you live in?

To respect the good people of the area in which we lived, I will refrain from saying, because as stated, there were good people there.
It was in Northern Carroll County and a very small, quaint town.
On a positive note, it had a great little ice cream parlor!

I have lived in Carroll County for about 5 years now, and I must agree with NYMD67 to an extent. Compared to other areas I have lived (Howard County) as well as numerous cities along the east coast, I have found Carroll County to be the most intolerant place I have lived.

It is a very beautiful area, and there are many nice people, but as far as diversity and open-mindedness, it is certainly lacking. I don't mean to dissuade anyone from moving here, but the previous poster is not the only one who feels that way.

Only great ice cream parlor I can think of is Simmons in Snydersburg. I understand but then there could not have been many "bad apples" if there were that many good people.
