Both cities seem under-rated, and rather cool and interesting in their development as what both might have been, or could have been, much larger cities than their present sizes.

If you were to compare them, how would you, and what would be better or worse according to your categories?

In other words, if you'll like one, you'll like the other? No question, no difference. Same same?

Of course it matters, they are different communities inhabited by different human beings. Does it matter to you? I doubt it.

TB, I have to demur on this. I am not familiar enough with Wheeling for a meaningful comparison.

I can't say I know Wheeling well but from the time I went through it and stopped for lunch it was really dumpy. Now that was decades ago. I was recently in Cumberland and while it's still got that rust belt look there are nice areas for sure.

It depends on whether you prefer/need civilization. Wheeling is close enough to Pittsburgh for that to factor in. Cumberland, well. No one knows what goes on there because it's functionally hidden from society.

If had to pick (while I like visiting both) - I would choose Wheeling (depends on your tax situation) - Cumberland is okay to visit for a couple hours - not much around. Wheeling has some houses w/nice architecture and things going on and around there. (Depends on what the virus will be affecting)

I enjoyed them both when I visited. Oglebay resort was nice. It has a lot of animals and pretty flowers in the spring.

But I'm one of those freaks of nature that enjoys both large cities and rural areas. So, keep that in mind.

Yeah Cumberland is really isolated. If that is your criteria, and I am that way to a point as well, then Wheeling looks like the better option.

Good point!

Cumberland to Pittsburgh, 4 hours.
Wheeling to Pittsburgh, 1 hour 19 minutes.
