We're thinking about moving to Ellicott City (Centennial Lane area), but I'm concerned about the commute. How long is the drive to Johns Hopkins Hospital during rush hour? What is the traffic like on Route 40? Does it cross through dangerous areas in West Baltimore?

Default Ellicott City to Johns Hopkins Hospital

You're looking at about a 30-minute commute. Route 40 is not the way to go, though. This will sound weird, but you'd actually do better to take 95 or, even better, 895 to north of the city then head into Hopkins from there. You don't want to drive into and through downtown Baltimore to get to the hospital. That would add about another 30 minutes and lots of frustration to your trip.

I live in Severn and my hubby works in Fells POint, not too far from Hopkins. He takes 895 to work all the time and has little complaint, other than the condition of the streets in Baltimore.

I would say your commute with parking and walking to the building would realistically be 30-40 min on average but can be up to a hour with traffic depending on time of day you leave. I would avoid taking route 40 all the way to the hospital as it does cross through some of the higher crime areas of baltimore.

U.S. 40 is certainly the most direct route, and probably the fastest too (due to all the congestion on the Beltway). But I personally do not feel secure driving on it, either through West Baltimore or East Baltimore.

It'll take longer, but if you don't feel like driving into the city, you could take the Route 310 commuter bus to Johns Hopkins Hospital. You can pick it up either at Columbia Mall or at the Snowden River Park & Ride (which is located off Snowden River Pkwy. just north of MD 175, near the Target though not directly connected to it).
