I grew up in Hagerstown and Denny's Pretzels were a huge treat. I know they are no longer made and sold, but I'm very curious about what happened since they were very unique. Recently I explored the neighborhood and a long-time resident stated the store was located on High St., between Salem Ave. and Church St. She stated that Dennis Thurston may still have the recipe. Another resident stated the place was once called Neimayer's. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Default Up-date from Denny's grandson

A family friend just sent me this link so I thought I'd give an up-date. My grandfather passed away the same day Hurricane Katrina hit. Not only did he have the pretzel shop but also a donut shop on Frederick St. Both shops have been out of business now for 35+ years yet many people in the Hagerstown area (which is where I grew up) still knew about the pretzels and inquire about them. My dad has the recipe and has been encouraged through the years to start making them again but as of yet has not. I remember when I was a teen my dad built a brick oven in our backyard so my grandfather could make a batch of pretzels so those of us in the younger generation could taste what all the hype was about...and yep you guys are right...they were delicious. I'll say something to dad again...who knows maybe it's time to make another batch for the Hagerstown area.

Hope this up-date was helpful...thanks for keeping my grandfather's name and legacy alive.

Gilbert Thurston

Gilbert Thurston,
Lets get those pretzels in the oven so we can savor them again.

My sister, Cindy, worked at Denny's Donuts on Frederick St. when she was in high school. When we were kids, we'd drive to the West End to get Denny's pretzels. I just crave those things sometimes. I would love to have the recipe or to be able to get them again. Is there any way to get in touch with your Dad? Maybe we could work something out. These were the best and one of my favorite childhood memories.

Default Denny's

I was just munching on some BOGUS pretzels and thought about how I wish Denny's were available!
Nothing compares.

Default Denny's Pretzels

I just now looked back at this thread and was thrilled to get to the bottom of Denny's Pretzels. Now, please, please, please can we have just one more taste of Denny's Pretzels?

Default Denny's

We talk about Denny's every time we talk about the BEST pretzel. I lived in the west end from birth to 1064. We used to walk to Denny's for a real treat. I knew Denny's nieces, Patty & Dottie. ( I hope I have that right - my brain is aged now). The old and simple days were pretty neat!

You know you can send a Private Message instead of reopening a dead thread for everyone to look at?
