Some areas on the Eastern Shore may be a bit more affordable and still be within your distance requirement...still, it will be tough to find something within your price range.

I agree. Although it is true that the housing may be a little less expensive than the Western Shore of MD, you will still be hard pressed to find a home under $275K .

The Middle River area of Baltimore County is a little farther away - about 40 miles to Annapolis - but with Rte 97 having a 65 mph speed limit unless there's an accident or something unusual you can get there at best in about 45 minutes, and at worst in about an hour. This area has townhomes, as well as small one story single family homes, in the $150,000 price range. The houses in this range may need a little updating. I've lived here all of my life, and I like the neighborhood. It's convenient to shopping and to recreation areas, and a lot of families live here. Right now there are plans to try to revitalize the area - especially around the waterfront, which is helping property values.

I know quite a few people who make the drive from the Baltimore area to Annapolis everyday, so it is do-able.

Another possibility would be Prince Frederick area in Calvert County... there are about a dozen homes priced under $250K (many short sales/bank owned). Prince Frederick is also about 40 miles from Annapolis. Also, there are some nice 3-level, spacious, garage townhomes being built in the $280K range in the heart of Prince Frederick...
