Baltimore to Philly is one and a half hours. If you don't have to commute to often, you could probably find a very nice place on the water within easy distance to the train station. I would rather do the hour and a half by train vs. the hour in a car.

Coming from Frisco, eh? Well, that means MD may not give you sticker shock. If you want a "town" feel, you can try Catonsville. I think the portion of Catonsville near the university of MD, Baltimore County may be just what you need. It's near a big state park for hiking, biking and nature walks. It also has larger homes and yards and a cute town "center" (sorry to use stupid irritating developer-speak) and schools within walking distance for kids. There's a MARC train stop nearby, so I think you can get to Amtrak to take the train to Philadelphia. If you don't make the trip everyday, you might like it.
