Any suggestions on the quickest route to take from Frederick, Maryland to Denver, Colorado?

When my husband went on a road trip out west, they took I-70.

When we drove back from Denver, we took I-70 but I just checked Mapquest and most of its suggested route is on I-80. Don't know why - it seems further north.

Thanks. I noticed this too. It's more miles on I-80 too. Any suggestions on good stopping points (lodge or dine) along the way? Kid friendly..

Our stops were Colby, Kansas, Columbia, MO, and Dayton, OH and we traveled with 3 kids (ages 6 thru 12). We had a great time at the Comfort Inn in Colby, seriously the best one we've ever stayed at, and ate at a converted train station in town that was very homey. We were returning home after a drive out west and were more interested in making time than sightseeing on this leg.

If you are going anytime but summer I would take the most southern route possible -- less chance of bad weather. I have done that drive both ways, for variety.

Stops for my husband (I wouldn't recommend his schedule!)
1. St. Louis, MO (it was about a 14-hour drive to get there)
2. WaKeeney, KS (another 14-hour drive) apparently they picked it because it had the essentials: campground, hotel, and a Dairy Queen (apparently that was civilization there!)

We'll be traveling during the winter. Hopefully 70 will not be too bad..

I've driven I-70 all the way to its western terminus in Utah. I stopped in Richmond Indiana, Topeka Kansas, and Georgetown Colorado. I highly suggest 70 for both speed and scenery. Yes, it goes through the Midwest, but it hits the prettiest parts of the Midwest in my opinion.

Also, weather shouldn't be a problem since you're not planning on going west of Denver. 70 west of Denver over the mountains is a NIGHTMARE in the winter, though. And I am from Montana so I am no wuss
