My husband and I are going to be stationed at Ft. Meade and are looking to buy a home. I have two small children and want to know the safest cities within 45 minutes drive to Ft. Meade. I have been looking at Columbia - Elioak area and Simpsonville area, specifically. My oldest will be starting school next year, as well, so I am looking for good schools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Obviously you already seem to know that Columbia is safer than the Ft Meade area. Are you presently living in MD or do you have friends living in the area? It really depends on what you are looking for. From my experience areas closer to a heavily urban area or suburban residential districts mixed with high amounts of retail establishments tend to have the most crime. It also depends on what you can afford ... safer neighborhoods with better schools have much pricier homes. You can look a little outside Columbi like Clarksville and Ellicott city and still be in your driving time. I have a good friend that lives in Carroll county and it takes him 45 minutes to get to Ft Meade. However be prepared for a SF home to cost from the mid 400's (older house) to the 600's and above. Townhomes will alos be near the 400 mark in decent areas
