I have visited a couple times. It's a very nice place but very remote so you should be prepared for that. No hospital the last time I was there, they boat or fly you to the mainland for that. It's pretty touristy in the summer months, they run boat tours to the island as well as nearby Tangier. About a 45 minute ride out, from what I remember although I have never taken the tourist boat.

That being said, it's a lovely place and definitely "quiet"...

There are books about Smith Island that can tell you more than I can. I went there with my nursing class to do a health fair. Two people showed up. . . or was it only one?. . . I wanted to "grow up" and be a nurse practitioner on the island, but that didn't pan out. Like you, Smith Island strikes my fancy. I think Smith Islanders are probably tolerant of strangers in their midst as long as you don't try to belong. . .they were polite but distant to us students.

it's a VERY quiet place but the community and unique culture there is amazing. it would really be a shame if that ceased to exist.

That is terribly unfair. Hurricanes hit Wilmington NC all the time. Do they refuse funds for residents there unless they move?

I went on a high school trip to Tylerton in 2006. Its EXTREMELY remote from the outside world and country isn't even the word.

No, but then Wilmington is not sinking into the water. I think it would be a waste of tax-payer money to try to elevate every house on Smith Island.

Yeah good point. I missed the part about paying to raise the homes.
