I am possibly relocating to MD for a job at Ft. Meade in about three months. I'd like to live within a 30 minute commute to work, but where there are many options for restaurant/bars. I would prefer a safe and relatively affordable apartment/condo/house rental. I have seen many threads in this forum asking the same thing, but most of them are a year or more old. I was looking at Silver Spring, Columbia, Millersville, Severne Park based on what I've read here, but I don't know how the commute would be from those places. I was hoping Silver Spring to Ft. Meade would be going the opposite of everyone else so the traffic wouldn't be heavy. I'm a single guy in my early 30s so I want some nightlife but not late night. I'm also hoping there are more single women my age there without kids, because here in the south there are almost no women over 30 that do not have children already. I appreciate any advice.

Crofton, Odenton, Millersville. Good luck with the 30 y/o with no kids.

Columbia would be the closest to Ft. Meade, and my personal recommendation. It is arguably Maryland's best suburban town to live in. Silver Spring has many nice areas as well, but it is at least twice the distance away. Also, while you would be heading against the traffic flow on I-95 (or the B/W Parkway) you would have to take the Beltway (I-495), which is notorious for congestion in both directions at virtually any time of day, but especially at rush hour.

Severn Park would be a short commute, but I don't know anything about Millersville.

price ranges for your rent would help immensely in giving you productive recommendations.

I don't really know what my budget will be yet, but I imagine I can spend between $1000 - $1300 for rent. Are most places there electric only or do they usually use gas for some things? I know that rent up there is at least double what I pay here, but I imagine most other things are around the same price. Thanks again.

I think there are probably quite a few optionsi in your price range but I do not know of specific communities to recommend for apartments. I don't know about the electric vs. gas - I myself prefer gas heating/cooking. hopefully you won't be on BGE but that's for another thread. . .
