I will be relocating to the area due to Ft. Monmouth closing due to the BRAC, like many of the other people, by summer of 2010. I have made a couple of trips down and did not really like the the Bel Air/Aberdeen/Abingdon/Havre de Grace area too much as it seemed either too expensive (bel air), too "southern" for me - by this I mean I drove by some house with confederate flags (Aberdeen/Abingdon), or a little too "seedy" (havre de grace). There difinitely were nice neighorhoods in each of the areas, but overall I just did not get a good feeling, but this may be that I was mainly in the wrong areas.

Anyhow, my question is about Perryville. This quaint little town on the water seemed nice, especially the Beacon Point community. Does anyone have anything to say about Perrville or Beacon Point.

P.S. I am also drawn to the area b/c it seems like it is up and coming, there seems to be a lot of land for development and I hear that there will be a Casino coming to town...

Please, any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

The "casino" is going to be a slot parlor. Slots only, no tables, no horsetrack. I'm a casino person, but slot only places do not appeal to me. They generally are not as nice as a real casino.

I live between Aberdeen and Havre de Grace, and while I am a southerner by birth, I have never felt like I am in the south nor have I ever seen a confederate flag. Additionally, my neighborhood (houses vary from $275-600k) is very diverse, and I like that. I don't think a confederate flag would last 30 seconds around here. I've found the area draws a lot of its influence from PA. We were expecting it to be more NJ-like, with good Italian places and such. No such luck. If anything, Cecil county is a lot more "country". FWIW, my coworker has sons in HdG High School. Her sons say they hear all sorts of racial slurs directed at them when they play football games with Fallston and Rising Sun.

We considered Cecil County, but wanted to be closer to things like grocery stores. There aren't many on that side of the bridge. Currently, the Hatem Bridge is $10/year, but I've heard rumors they may drop the annual pass. We ended up where we did because the lots ize (3/4 acre), neighborhood is very nice, price was about 25% less than Bel Air, we are 6 minutes from the gate, and 7 minute from Target/Home Depot/ and two grocery stores.

That's what I was afraid over, as I am a big fan of Table games. I was wondering though, come casino usually comes more development and nice restaurants and what have you. Any thoughts on if this will be true?

From reading on the internet I was surprised that I liked Cecil County better than I did places in Harford being that Harford is more suburban and Cecil more rural. Perryville to me though, had a very subarban and nice feel to it - again these were first impressions, hence why I seek advice from people more familar with the areas.

What actual town do you live in? And any recommendations on where else I should be looking?

The appeal of the shopping and everything that you describe is definitely more along my pace and what I would desire and prefer, but it was the people that I was a little weary of. But from what you have told me, it sounds like the area you are in would be a good fit for me, and I would definitely appreciate any more info you may provide.

Thank you, rubytue. (were you going for Ruby Tuesday's as in the restaraunt? I love their burgers!)

Nope, the Rolling Stones song (which was where the UT students took the name from the restaurant, which was founded 20 minutes from my hometown )

The post office considers us Havre de Grace. Harford considers us county. The subdivision behind us (as in you drive by out house to get there) was annexed by Aberdeen, but still has an HdG zip code. I considers us more Aberdeen, as we are very close to 22. I can run out to Home Depot, buy a tube of caulk, and be back in 20 minutes. I like to say that Aberdeen has everything you need, but nothing you want. Thats a big of an overstatement, but we have two grocery stores, a Walgreen, a Target, a Home Depot, and several RedBoxes for DVD rentals. They are opening a Panera Bread very soon, that means there might be something we want Seriously though, our location is great for working on post. The rt 22 gate is 6-8 minutes away, and most of that depends on the traffic lights.

What size/age/acreage are you looking for? If you wants SFH, newer home, but don't mind small lots - check out Grace Harbor in HdG. Right behind me are newer homes , 1/2-3/4 acre, but they are in the 400 to 600k range. My neighborhood is about 40 years old and 3/4 acre lots. Very quiet, no one knows we are here. We are off Robinhood Rd. Robinhood itself might seem not too nice, but turn off onto Titan or Sherwood and there are really nice houses. Or keep driving up and follow it out to Chapel. If you like the freedom of non-HOA neighborhoods, I like this area. If you have lots of money, then Bulle Rock is very nice. Too HOA for me.

Another area we *loved* was Long Bar Harbor, which is on the water down Rt 40. We really focused on that neighborhood, but never could find the right house at the right price. Other than Long Bar Harbor, we weren't really a fan of Abingdon. Lots of newer neighborhoods, but the construction quality of many of the houses wasn't that great (5 year old houses with huge drywall cracks in structural-suggesting locations). We also looked at Joppatowne, but could never get a good read on if the neighborhood was declining or stable.

My friend lives in Beacon Point.
She moved there from Harford County. I like their house and the area is nice to visit but she would sell her house in a heart beat if she could move back to Harford County. That is her opinion of course because she ends up coming down to HA County for everything from shopping to swimming. They have great neighbors and moved there in 2006 I believe. Her complaint is there is not much to do there with the kids unless you drive everywhere.

I live in North East, about a 7 minute drive to Perryville. That town is definitely growing but lacks a real downtown. HDG and North east have main street down town areas if you like that. You get to know everyone that way - the butcher, the coffe shop folks, the uys who run the deli, etc. It's very nice. And, because North east is on the water, you can enjoy lots of water oriented activites along with the Elk neck State park down rt 272.

I live in Beacon Point. I am origionally from Delaware. I lived in Aberdeen for 7 years. It's a little too country for me. Perryville has the best of both worlds. You are close to Wilmington and Baltimore and Lancaster, PA . We have a grocery store but driving over the bridge to another choice is no big deal. We have a beautiful new library. We are 5 minutes from the water and parks. The neighborhood is nice. People keep their properties maintained and looking nice. Bulle Rock Golf Course, rated in the top ten in North America for golf courses is located just over the bridge in Havre de Grace. I highly recommend this town. There has been a lot of growth in the 8 1/2 years I have lived here. More to come. There are good schools and plenty of Churches. There is something for everyone here.

Moving4Apg...

Perryville isn't too bad, and I would take a look at North East as well, and there's a lot of new home construction going on in the town. There are some areas that are southern between Bel Air and Elkton, and the further north you go towards the PA line, the more you will see that. North East, is right near the water, plus there's DE tax free shopping, and yes it's a lot more rural than Harford Co. is.

Another thing to add is that Cecil is cheaper in property tax and some utilties as well. Not sure what kinda of house/home you are looking at when you get down here. There are a lot of nice and newer homes in the area as well, so don't let that deter you. Prices are cheaper at this time of year, so hopefully you find something soon.

It seems like a lot of people are relocating to the Delaware/Maryland area from Fort Monmouth. If you lived in New Jersey and like paying the high taxes, then Maryland is your place. High taxes on everything, plus everything you purchase is taxed. Delaware is a great place to live with very low taxes and still within 45 minutes to Aberdeen, Md. I live in Bear,De. which is 25 miles to Aberdeen and 15 Miles to Perryville that you were asking about. I am in the process of possibly getting employed at Aberdeen, but I am moving to Lewes,De which is probably a 90 minute drive. If you are interested in a very nice neighbor hood and want to live in Delaware on 3/4 of an acre, I can provide you the information. It's approximately 25 miles to Aberdeen.

Bash- I moved to De from Fort Monmouth and completely agree with you. The only thing I would add is that the school district is also amazing!!! The commute is exactly 40 min for my husband and we are right on the border and in a good school district.
