we just moved to Elkton (loving it) and need the best route to Buffalo. There is no great road headed Northwest out of town. Any suggestions?

Going northwest from Newark, DE, I would take 896 to 30 to 283 to Harrisburg. Don't take 896 near Lancaster on the weekend though- too many "Amish Country" tourists. I'd imagine the parallel routes would be better in that case- 41, maybe?

From Harrisburg, you can pick up 15 going north to NY.

Here's a short route for the adventurous from Harrisburg area to Buffalo.

US 322 west to Potters Mills
PA 144 north to Pleasant Gap
PA 26 north to I-80
I-80 west to Snow Shoe exit 147
PA 144 north to PA 879
PA 879 west to just past Karthaus (CAR-thuuuhs)
Turn right on Quehanna Highway - good standard state maintained hard road
Turn right on Wykoff Run Road - good hard road
Turn left on PA 120 at Sinnemahoning
North on PA 46, just past Emporium
North on US 219 expressway near Bradford, on up to Buffalo

Default google maps

Thank you for the route ideas:

Here is what Google Maps has to say about various routes:

1) Pcity's route: 368 miles - 7hrs 14 min
2) ki0eh route: 360 miles - 8 hrs 47 min
3) Google's Suggested Route using 476N-81-86-390-20A: 416 miles - 7hrs 9 minutes
4) Google's 2nd Suggested Route using 30-283-322-80-219: 385 miles - 7hrs 40 min

Any votes on which of the above would be consistently the fastest? Would route #2 be much faster than google suggests?

I really wonder about the algorithm - 81 to 86 at Binghamton seems not so great, 86 is still low speed NY 17 for a bit east of Elmira too. Usually Phila to Corning travel would use 476 to 80 west to 15 north (15 is so much shorter than the I-180 expressway at Williamsport, except for the 2 weekends of the Little League World Series 15 gets you ahead time wise) to 86 west. 15 is now no traffic lights from Williamsport to Corning, and 65 mph except in 2 long term construction zones. 81 between Scranton and Binghamton is always under construction somewhere, it's pretty bad right now just north of the 476 junction at Clarks Summit according to the folks on the NEPA forum (I took US 11 around that area on my last trip up that way).

I presume there are some other cuts in the route #4, because 322 doesn't actually intersect 80 until west of 219. With the new highway opened by State College and Port Matilda, to way west on I-80 points it's now slightly faster than the route I mentioned in my post #3, to take 322 west thru Philipsburg almost to Clearfield, cut over on PA 970 near Woodland to get on I-80 at exit 123. A problem with cutting over on I-99 to 80 is that you went almost as far on two lane roads over to State College to get to the new I-99 and PENNDOT insists on posting the straight and flat I-99 at 55 mph even through the Rockview Prison.

There's not much point to stay on I-80 all the way west to US 219 crossing at exit 97 - it would be much faster (even to Brockway due to current I-80 construction around DuBois!) to get off at exit 111 and take the fast PA 153 (unless you get stuck behind a coal truck) up to meet 219 north of Brockway. But I don't see that adding more of I-80 gets you anywhere over my route through the Quehanna - Ridgway and Johnsonburg are slow going and the cops love the area around the US 6 junction (I got pulled over for going 58 mph at the bottom of a hill near there, and that's all I was going!

Default ki0eh route

This info is great. I think the optimal route based on what I am hearing (that is still somewhat simple) between Buffalo and Harrisburg is:

219 (131 miles) to 153 (17 miles) to 80E (12 miles) to 970S (1.4 miles) to 322 (119 miles)

ki0eh, can you confirm the above?

Now, the question becomes Elkton to Harrisburg? Google suggests Singerly rd. (Rt 213) to Lewisville Rd. to Church Road to 896 to 10 to 41 to 30 to 283. Any thoughts out there? Seems very backroadish and lots of turns.

153 to 219 is a good route as well. You have to slow down for some small towns, but most of it is posted at 45-55.

896-10-41-30-283 is backroadish but there's no better way really.

You can do 896 all the way to 30 if it's a weekday or not tourist season. It slows in spots but it's faster than it looks on the map.

Default Thanks again... very helpful

So does anyone recommend taking 83 - 695 -95N to get from Harrisburg to Elkton or somehow taking 476? These routes seem easier to follow. Does one save time by taking the backroads?

I guess if you're there a while you can do a lot of experimenting!

I'd still say the Quehanna Hwy way through Emporium would be faster than 219 thru Ridgway. Ridgway is a nicer looking town but Johnsonburg cancels that out. Quehanna Hwy is probably the 2nd loneliest paved road in PA (second to PA 144 from the 879 junction north to Renovo), sometimes that gives folks the heebie-jeebies to go that deep in the PA Wilds | Home (http://www.pawilds.com/index.aspx - broken link) - but as many times as I've driven and hiked in that area I still haven't seen an elk.

I don't think 83-695-95N works well, because you're going 45 miles out of your way just to avoid 35 miles of backroads. Unless your average highway speed is 80+, I don't think you come out ahead there.

476-81 might be a better option because it eliminates all the backroads- no 153, no 219, no non-highway part of 322. But you're still going 50 miles out of your way.
